Breaking Barriers: How Tailored Support Helped Luke Thrive in Construction

After completing courses in bricklaying and construction at college, Luke’s next natural step was to obtain his CSCS card so he could begin looking for work in the construction industry but he didn’t know how to go about it. He came to ANTA Education as he was also facing struggles with mental health, with his anxiety making it difficult to be in large groups. His learning was also affected by having dyslexia, and some learning difficulties which made retaining information difficult.

We were able to offer Luke 1-1 tutoring to help him gain his Level 1 Health & Safety in Construction, away from a crowded classroom which wouldn’t have been an ideal learning environment for him.  We also provided a reader, and additional time for his exam to ensure his dyslexia didn’t set him back on achieving his qualification.

This support continued when revising for the final CITB Health & Safety exam which he passed first time, scoring 90% on his exam.  At this point we were able to order his CSCS card for him , but the journey didn’t end there.

Utilising our links with local employers, we were able to put Luke forward for a job interview. Luke’s positive attitude shone through and he was offered the position.  He credits the new structure to his day for being key in helping his mental health.

Of the experience with ANTA, Luke’s mother said,

“I’d highly recommend ANTA. My son has been involved with you and he has really gained confidence. He has passed his exams and now has courses under his belt that he struggled to do at college because of the environment. He’s now working and I’m so proud of him."

We were able to support Luke with funding from Telford & Wrekin Council’s UKSPF fund. If you live in Telford and want to find out if we can support you. Call 01952 973200 or email rachel@antaeducation.co.uk
